The "I Forgot" Myth: Why You Never Forget To Brush Your Teeth

You said you forgot to work out today.

Let us be brutally honest. That is a lie.

You do not forget to brush your teeth. You do not forget to put on pants before you leave for work. You do not forget to drink your morning coffee.

Why? Because you do not have to think about those things. They happen on autopilot. They are glued to your daily routine.

When you say "I forgot to work out", what you are really saying is "I failed to build a trigger."

You are relying on your memory to do hard work. Memory is a terrible tool for fitness.

The Airplane Checklist

Think about an airplane pilot. They do not sit in the cockpit and try to remember how to start the engine. They have a pre-flight checklist. One step automatically triggers the next step.

Flip this switch. Turn that dial. Start the engine.

You need a pre-flight checklist for your fitness. This is called Habit Stacking.

You take a new habit (doing 5 pushups) and you glue it to an old habit that you already do every single day (starting the coffee maker).

The old habit acts as the trigger.

The Fix For Tomorrow Morning

Do not try to find a random 45-minute window tomorrow. You will fail. You will tell yourself you forgot.

Do this instead:

  1. Walk into your kitchen.

  2. Start the coffee maker.

  3. The second you hit the BREW button, drop to the floor.

  4. Do 5 pushups while the coffee brews.

That is your entire workout for the day. It takes less than two minutes.

You do not need to remember to work out. You just need to remember to make coffee. The coffee makes the pushups happen.

Standardize before you optimize. Build the trigger first. The muscles come later.

Cheers
